Digital Desk, Varanasi. IIT Gandhinagar Director Professor Sudhir Kumar Jain has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) by President Ram Nath Kovind. The Registrar’s Office of BHU has appointed Professor Jain as the Vice-Chancellor for a period of three years. BHU spokesperson Rajesh Singh said that Professor Jain will take over as the 28th Vice Chancellor of the university. After the tenure of Prof. Rakesh Bhatnagar ended on March 28 this year, Professor V.K. Shukla was looking after the affairs as the caretaker vice-chancellor.
He said that the date of joining of Professor Jain would be announced soon. Professor Jain did his BA from the University of Roorkee in 1979 and then completed his MS and PhD from California Institute of Technology Pasadena in 1980 and 1983. He conceptualized and developed the National Informatics Center for Earthquake Engineering at IIT Kanpur with the objective of disseminating information and literature and building capacity against earthquake disasters.
Professor Jain also conceived, developed and conducted the National Program on Earthquake Engineering Education with the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development with the objective of developing earthquake engineering in colleges of engineering, architecture and polytechnics in the country. Professor Jain is known for conceptualizing and developing an Internet-based platform for the exchange of ideas and debated issues related to structural engineering.
