Digital Desk, Manila. Sara Duterte Carpio, daughter of Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte and running for Vice President in 2022 elections, has confirmed her alliance with presidential candidate Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who is now leading the election. For the first time since filing his candidacy on Saturday, 43-year-old Duterte Carpio appealed to the people of the Philippines to support him, Xinhua news agency reported.
In a video post on Facebook, Duterte Carpio said he was confident the Philippines would help and support him until he wins the election amid challenges. Marcos, 64, the only son of former President Ferdinand Marcos, confirmed his alliance in a separate statement. Duterte-Carpio said his decision to forge an alliance with Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was not meant to derail the candidatures of other candidates. Talking about unity, he said that our aim is not only to carry forward the initiative of President Duterte but also to take forward the programs of the administration.
Under the law of the Philippines, the election of the President and the Vice President is done separately. Monday was the last day for nominations, when Duterte, 76, filed his certificate of candidacy for senator in the coming elections. He had announced last month that he was retiring from politics and would not run according to the wishes of the people in the next election. Duterte was elected as the President of the Philippines in 2016 and his term is set to end on 30 June 2022. The constitution limits the presidents of the Philippines to a 6-year term. The next election is to be held on 9 May 2022.
