Heavy rain continues in Bangladesh, normal life comes to a s...

Digital Desk, Dhaka. Normal life has come to a standstill after heavy rains in some parts of Bangladesh under the influence of cyclonic storm Jawad. According to the news agency Xinhua, no major damage has been reported so far due to heavy rains. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has recorded 44 mm of rain in Dhaka in the last 24 hours. Faridpur district, about 101 km from Dhaka, recorded 76 mm of heavy rainfall, while Jashor, 164 south-west of Dhaka, recorded 68 mm.

It rained almost on Monday in Dhaka under the influence of pressure over the Bay of Bengal. The main city areas saw less crowds as people preferred to stay indoors. Roads and lanes in some parts of the city were flooded with knee-deep water, causing immense hardship to commuters and lakhs of people living here. As usual, rickshaws emerged as a means of relief in Dhaka’s many waterlogged areas, which are usually buzzing with activity.

Meteorologist Abul Kalam Mallick said that the deep pressure presently formed in the north and mid-west region of the Bay of Bengal has already weakened into a low pressure. He said it will move north-northeastwards and weaken into a low pressure by Monday. In a special weather bulletin on Monday, the BMD has forecast a reduction in rainfall in the country in the next 72 hours.

It said the effect of strong weather is likely to continue on the country’s ports, including the major Chattogram port, about 242 km south-east of Dhaka. Due to the prevalence of strong winds, the ports were advised to issue a local warning sign number 3. All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay have been asked to stay indoors until further notice.
