Digital Desk, Geneva. UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide Alice Wairaimu Nderitu said Ethiopia was at risk of genocide due to calls for weapons and violent hate speech by irresponsible leaders.
On Friday, he expressed serious concern over the worsening situation in Ethiopia, Xinhua news agency reported. He said irresponsible leaders’ speech, militarization of society, ethnic profiling, denial of humanitarian access and blockades of food and misuse of medical supplies in areas inhabited by specific ethnic communities continue.
Nederitu said those leaders are leading the country on a path where the risk of commission of atrocious crimes, including genocide, is real and should be addressed as of utmost urgency. The Special Advisor called upon the regional and international actors to intensify their engagement to prevent this fall. He also reminded the parties in conflict that they are accountable to the citizens of their country, their region and the world under international human rights and humanitarian law.
Naderitu said it was not too late to prevent further suffering and to end hostilities through meaningful and constructive dialogue. Regional and international actors have provided leaders in Ethiopia with the tools and mechanisms to conduct such negotiations. It is more imperative than ever that they demonstrate their true leadership in word and deed, committing to follow this path immediately.
